Uva ursi

  • Reduces inflammation
  • Good for urinary tract infections
  • Improves digestion

Uva ursi can help to reduce inflammation and is often used for infections of the kidney, bladder or urethra. It has been shown to have anti-bacterial effects on staph. aureus infections as well as generial antibacterial properties.

How does it work

Uva appears appears to have it’s general antibacterial properties on a large number of bacterial strains. Theere are several mechanisms the most likely being that it prevvents bacteria from attaching on to target tissue. This is similar to how procyanidins in cranberry work to treat UTIs in the urinary tract.

Arbutinin in uva ursi is also metabolised to hydroquinone that accumulate in bacteria underlying the therapeutic effects.

Arbutinin is used in skin cosmetics as it is converted to hydroquinone and this is used to inhibit the formation of melanin by blocking the enzyme tyrosinase however the strength in oral supplements as opposed to topical application means that this benefit is weak.
