    The need to know

    What is it?

During pregnancy, the rapid growth of your baby means that your requirement for essential vitamins and minerals increases. A lack of essential elements can affect healthy growth.

Our medical team has put together this comprehensive supplement pack not only for the healthy growth of your baby but for you too designed to cover any gaps in your diet. Delivered 4 weekly in easy-to-use daily packs. Each daily pack contains all the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients like Methyl Folate, omega-3, Choline, Iron, and more. They have been meticulously chosen for their synergistic benefits, ensuring the wellness of both mother and baby.

    The Science

Methyl folate is required for brain tissue, red cells and normal DNA production. Around 1 in 7 people can’t metabolise folic acid so make sure you get the active methyl folate.

DHA omega 3 makes up 30% of brain tissue but is found in every cell in the body. Essential for normal skin, nerves and muscle. Many omega 3 only have a small amount of DHA. Only 5% of the “short chain” omega 3’s found in flaxseed and chia are converted to DHA. 96% of people we test are low in omega 3.

Choline is needed to make healthy cell walls and is a crucial element to the basic building block of an essential neurotransmitter. It is needed for normal foetal brain development, which is why it is also used in cognitive decline.

Iron women generally need twice the amount of iron compared to men so low iron is more common. Iron is needed to make haemoglobin in the baby’s blood. However, Mum needs it too. The volume of blood goes up in pregnancy, increasing demands even further.

Vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cells, energy production, brain and nerves. 11% of people we test are low in vitamin B12. Less active forms of B12 include cyanocobalamin so aim for a more active form like methylcobalamin or hydroxocobalamin.

Calcium is needed for the baby’s bones, heart, muscles and nerves. You need at least 1g per day and if you don’t eat dairy products there is a risk. Your body will remove calcium from your bones if needed, and that can lead to osteoporosis later in life. Fortified foods like orange juice can also be a good source.

Magnesium is required for normal bone and teeth formation. It works alongside calcium to develop healthy bones. Due to changes in the way our food is farmed magnesium levels in the population have dropped by 70%. Magnesium is needed for muscle, energy and regular sleep.

Phosphorous is the second most abundant mineral in the body after calcium, so you need lots of it. The normal daily requirement is 700mg, and this increases to a whopping 1250mg per day in pregnancy. Good sources include salmon, dairy, almonds, eggs and lentils, almonds,.

Vitamin D3 with vitamin K2 If you have a darker skin type and live in the UK, you have a 95% of having vitamin D deficiency in the Winter, 60% of us go around with sub-optimal levels all year round. It is essential for the baby’s bones and teeth and reduces the chances of getting infections. Vitamin K2 stops calcium from being taken from your bones and protects against osteoporosis.

Iodine often missing from prenatal supplements it is the most common deficiency found in vegetarians and vegans. It is essential for you to make thyroid hormones which maintain energy levels. It is essential for your baby to make a healthy spinal cord, brain and nerves. Using iodised salt when cooking can be an easy alternative to make sure you are getting enough. Iodine is very difficult to measure in the body, it can only be done reliably with a special urine stress test so is often missed.

Essential trace minerals zinc, copper and selenium are the most important ones. They are essential for making a group of important enzymes called metalloproteases. These cover 100’s of enzymes that are important for hormone production, glutathione and antioxidants, nerves and red blood cells. In the UK copper deficiency is rare however too much zinc can cause it to drop therefore taking both in a careful balance is essential.

Other important trace minerals include chromium, manganese, and molybdenum. Manganese is required to make normal bone and cartilage.

Vitamin A is needed for eyesight and the formation of normal mucus membranes that line the gut and lungs. We get the precursor carotenoids from red and orange vegetables which are a great source of vitamin C and other minerals, so stock up on the colourful veggies.

Vitamin B2 riboflavin is the most common B vitamin deficiency in the recent national dietary survey. Essential for producing energy. So when your baby is moving around more in the third trimester it will be in need of riboflavin, if you are already deficient then they may be deprived. It’s needed to break down carbs and carry oxygen
